craftgrrl | ModPodge - Help on alternatives (especially for Europe)

I've taken a look in the memories, and found a lot of good info on ModPodge and other bits for decopague.

I'm getting ready to tackle my first project, and I'm heading out this afternoon to buy the supplies.

My problem is that I'm in Europe and I've not seen ModPodge sold over here. I've read about some alternatives, including Elmer's glue (not sold here, and I've not found anything similar which is odd!) watered down and wallpaper paste.

What would you suggest as an alternative to ModPodge? I've seen a few people here who are all about acrylic matte, which I did see in a store here (and very highly priced....not sure if the store I'm going to today will have it).

Also, what kind of varnish do you all use? Spray varnish or brush on - and what should I be looking for?

If anyone has any German product names, I'd be grateful, too :)
