I need some help from my fellow polymer clay enthusiasts!

I usually prefer to glaze my work, but lately some projects have necessitated sanding and buffing. So, I have 2 questions:

1) If you buff your work, what do you use? I tried a regular cloth, which did next to nothing; then a shoe-buffing cloth, which helped a little but didn't come close to getting it really shiny. I can't afford any fancy machinery. Are there any other good methods I can try?

2) I have tried sanding some things made with black clay, and they've gotten discolored. I've sanded everything under water in the sink, as instructed; and for this last project, only used 800-grit sandpaper. Still got discolored. Any way to keep this from happening? Is 800-grit still too coarse for black clay items?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you! :)
