Sewing issues

I'm new to decorative sewing and was wondering if anyone had an idea as to wear I could find some diagrams or what have you for some decorative stitches (by hand)? Attempting what would seem to be the simple chain stitch, I have found I am going to need improvement on it. Thanks everyone, for humoring a clueless girl =)
