Making a Slipcover

Has anyone here ever made a "casual" slipcover without a pattern? I am thinking of doing so. I have an idea in my mind of how it should be, but I want to make sure I'm on the right track. Also, I'm having some difficulty visualizing the pattern for the arms.

I have been putting this project off because we don't have a sewing machine, but it occurred to me that I should be able to use fabric glue instead. How durable is that stuff? Am I right in thinking that I'll get a better bond if I use a highly textured fabric?
