New girl / hat help

devrat. I've been checking it regularly for the past two weeks and just decided to bite the bullet and join.
Anyway, I could use help with something. I bought a plain black bucket hat from Target for $3. I want to make it more interesting, but how? Buttons? Patches? Ribbons? I'm an absolute klutz at using fabric paint, so stencils aren't an option.
Ideas? I'm wearing this hat to the Curiosa music festival in a week. Long live Robert Smith!
