silkscreen vs stencil

craftgrrlhi, i just joined this community and am going to silkscreen some tee shirts using the awesome embroidery hoop tutorial.
anyway, i was wondering when one would choose to silkscreen and when one would stencil. is silkscreen for finer detail? which one is better for using multiple colours? is it just personal preference?
