evil knitting needle nightmares

Yo-

I really, really want to make the kitty hat - I've never really knitting anything but a scarf before, but I'm a fast learner.

My question is: I've worked with circular needles before, and am alright with them. DPN's really frighten me - like a lot. Are they necessary to the pattern? Can I knit the entire thing in the round? Or will I have to find someone to teach me how to use DPNs?
