follow up on blue chocolate
Sep. 11th, 2004 01:10 amthank you everyone who helped me out with my question about dying chocolate that i posted here and here.
this is the end result.

i found out the next day that she can't eat white chocolate, so that idea was basically thrown out the window. i ended up having silver hearts and using blue sprinkles (i was so excited to find them!). the sprinkles weren't really the right colour, but they were the only ones i could find.

i made lots of little hearts in dark, milk and white chocolate (because even if she can't eat it, there's someone else i work with who can only eat white chocolate).
to make them silver, i used pure silver leaves, which are edible and commonly used as decorations on indian sweets. a woman at work told me that they are called barukh, which is pronounced bar-ack, much like an army barrack. i went to a little indo store and asked for them in my awful caucasian accent and they looked at me blankly until i said 'edible silver foil".
the foil is so delicate that even breathing too hard would cause it to mess up, so it took a little while to get the hang of it. i figured out that if i left the chocolates in the fridge, and then put the silver on while they are still cold and have a slight amount of condensation on them, it sticks very nicely and is much smoother. i'd been attempting to apply it using a chopstick and a clean paintbrush!
and i cooked the cupcakes in silver foil cupcake things (what are those called?). they looked okay, but i wasn't too happy with that. i'd never used them before, and they came layered, one paper and one tin, so i assumed i used both, but then the paper stuck to the cupcake like it always does, and the tin didn't, so it stuck out funny. could i have just used the tin? i wasn't sure.
i also made her a card. her colours are silver and navy, so i went to michaels and went nuts picking out scrapbooking stuff in those colours. i've never really made a card with everything purchased like this before, and while i really like it, it doesn't feel as personal.

because everyone in our department has to sign it, i made it extra long, to fold down.

i bought these from micheals because i didn't have any way of attaching the vellum that wouldn't show, and i thought i'd use them more than vellum tape (and it was the same price).

i DO NOT RECOMMEND THESE. they weren't a standard height, even though they said they were. one side of the dot was usually way higher than the other, and nothing sat right once stuck to them. it was a bit better after i cut them in half, but not perfect and i shouldn't have had to cut them in half. what a waste of $9!
