Every year for my friend Vanessa's birthday, I try and make her something that is both awesome, and usable. This year I made her a skirt from some knit material I got at Joann's during the big sale, and a matching bag. The pattern called for two yards of fabric, but I had enough scrap left over to make the bag, as well as a fabric headband.

this is the skirt.

this is the bag. on the outside is the same knit fabric as the skirt, and on the inside it is lined with pink broadcloth. basically, it is just one of those bags that is a circle with the cording running through it. you tighten the cording to close the bag.

this is the finished project. I rolled the skirt up and stuck it inside the bag and then double tied the cording around to keep it secure.

Now that my sister has moved out, I got to convert her room into a craft room. How decadent!

and lastly, my newest purchase, a janome 644 d serger. I used the serger on the skirt to finish off all of the seams and top casing where the elastic was inserted. the speed took some getting use to, but the skirt turned out wonderfully despite it being my first serger project.
the skirt and bag were made using simplicity pattern number 7090, although i did use 3/4" wide elastic, instead of the recommended 1/4". It just seemed too lose, and because the knit was heavier, it needed some heavier elastic.
