Painting Mugs

I would like to personalize some plain coffee mugs with paint, but I'm not sure which kind of paint is the best to use. Obviously I want something non-toxic that will withstand washing and such. Any suggestions? And do I need to use any sealer to keep the paint from scraping/wearing off?
