a crafty question!

hi kids, new here, and in need of a craft question answer:

i have a glass jar i want to turn into a gift. i want to collage it with tissue paper; i seem to remember doing this in elementary school, but don't remember for sure (usually it was to make glass jars into candle holders)
so i need to know how to get the tissue paper on and what sort of coating would be involved to make it stay and be smooth and such?
