Are there any really NICE looking synthetic yarns out there??

My friend just started knitting and she wants to make me a scarf. I told her I'd buy the yarn that I liked and she could knit with it. So I went to a few nice yarn shops and I am getting discouraged! I am allergic to wool and it seems like all the really lovely yarn is wool or a wool blend. Even the blends that are like 25% wool and the rest acrylic are too itchy for me...what I want is one of those chunky/homey yarns, maybe one that has a hand dyed look to it. I want it in red. All the acrylics I am finding are like, really thin and lame looking. I don't want anything like a "novelty" yarn, or chenille either...these are some yarns that I like, but they are all wool...



Is there such a thing as really nice quality synthetic yarn?
