Quilt layout help

craftgrrlI'm making a super-duper basic quilt for my boyfriend for his birthday, but I would like some advice on the layout. 
is what I came up with to start with, but it just looks way too boring. I'm puting photos, poems, and refrences to inside jokes on each of the solid colored pieces, but I still just need some better layout ideas to make it more fun. I have close-up shots of each of the prints if that would help. Thanks for any help or advice!
