Trouble Threading My Sewing Machine

craftgrrlI got a sewing machine for Christmas, but the instruction manual is vague and I'm having trouble threading it. When I try to sew something, it pulls the top thread down into the bobbin case. The stitches come out all bunched up. I'm obviously doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what. I've only hand-sewed up to this point, so my knowledge of sewing machines is minimal.
How do I find out the proper way to thread a sewing machine? A friend suggested I take it to a sewing machine shop and have an employee show me. Think that'll work, or do you have any other ideas?
