As promised earlier today...
Jan. 23rd, 2005 08:37 pmWell lets start at we very beginning...do. re. mi...sorry couldn't resist.
Ok, firstly lets just say that Harry Potter, Hogwarts, and The House Names are copyright J.K.Rowling, Warner Bros. and a hell load of other people/companies who aren't me.
Secondly, the excellent knitting pattern this pattern is made from is copyright Lauren Kent.
Thirdly, this pattern, tutorial and pictures are copyright me, Chris Earle, so don't be a theif. Kay? You can use this tutorial for your own non-commercial purposes. And no selling it for your own gain.
Now lets get to it. The actual Hogwarts scarf has 19 stripes, 10 of the darker color 9 of the lighter. And each stripe measures about 4 inches high and 8 inches wide, but the scarf is double thickness so the width is actually doubeled. Also, the scarves have 11 tassels on each end, 6 of the darker color, 5 of the light.
Colors: Gryffindor- Red and Gold
Ravenclaw- Blue and Silver (movie colors)
Blue and Bronze (book colors)
Hufflepuff-Black and Yellow
Slytherin- Green and Silver
Or...you could use your school colors and be super school spirited!
Ok, the Pattern
Materials
- 2- 25 inch lengths of 60 inch wide fleece (one in each color you're going to use).
- Thread- any color you cant see it when the scarf is done.
- Some bristol board, or cardboard.
- Scissors
- A ruler (the longer the better)
- Some chalk
- A sewing machine helps, unless youve got a lot of patience and want to hand stich it
- A large crochet hook helps too, for adding the tassels
Making the template
Ok so each block, is 4x8 inches, so since the scarf is double thickness each one is actually 4x16. I added a seam allowance of half an inch on each side of the block. So my template was 5x17 inches.
Just use your ruler to measure out a rectangle of these dimensions on your bristol board.
Cut this out.
Yay! Now we have a wonderful scarf template of doom!
Cutting out the fabric
Trace out your template onto the ugly side of your fleece, 10 times on the darker color (red, blue, black or green for the hogwarts scarves) and 9 times on the lighter color ( Gold, Silver, Bronze or Yellow for the hogwarts scarves). Try and arrange the pieces in a way that makes the least amount of waste fabric (no one wants to be an earth killer).
Cut out your pieces, there should be 19 in total.
The sewing of the Beast
Basically the entire scarf is just straight seams.
Lay two differen color pieces on top of each other, so that the good sides of the fleece are facing in. And sew up one of the long sides.
Continue sewing on atlernating pieces until you run out. The 2 end pieces should be your darkest color. Then fold the long piece of fabric you now have in half ( the way so it is still just as long, just half as wide) with all of the seams facing out. Then just do one simple straight seam up the open edge. Now all the sewing in the scarf is done! Yay!
Leave the bottom and top ends open. They will be closed by the tassels.
Back to the cutting board
Now with your leftover fabric, cut a bunch of 1cm wide strips of fleece, made them as long as possible. Then cut them into foot long lengths. You need 3 strips for each tassel, so with 22 tassels (11 on each side) youll need 66 foot long strips. So get cutting!
Making the tassels
For this step youll need your strips from the last setp, scissors, and your crochet hook (opt.). I start in the middle, about half an inch from the edge, cut a slit (across and not too big) through both layers of fleece. Then stick your crochet hook through the slit you jsut made. Hook 3 strips of your darker color, and haul them halfway through the hole. Remove the hook, pass the open ends of the strips through the loop you just made. Pull tightly. Then start doing your other tassels in the same manner. Remember to alternate colors, and the darker color should be the last color on each end. In my scarves I only use nine tassels (not 11) mainly because eleven looks too cramped and are too hard to fit in.
Well there you go! Now you've got one fancy hogwarts scarf to flaunt wherever you go (and to wear to the upcomming book and movie releases).
You can also make a scarf in the style of the third and fourth movies the same way you made this scarf. Just with some alterations to the template.
Sorry for the lack of pictures. I wanted to get thge tut up asap. I may edit the tutorial later on, possibly tomorrow.
