Learning to Sew

Hey everyone,
I looked through the memories and found a lot of of posts about sewing machines for the beginner etc, but not quite what I was looking for. Anyway, I want to learn the basics of sewing. My mother doesn't know how to sew on a machine and I've never taken home ec or anything similar, so basically I'm a complete beginner. My question is, if I bought a machine, would it be possible for me to teach myself? Or should I take a sewing class of some kind? Have any of you taken such a class? If so, how did you like it?
