craftgrrl | Hip scarf help?

I'm a bellydancer, and hip/coin scarves are very, very expensive. I've been trying to make my own, but I don't know how to crochet beyond the basic chain stitch, and crochet seems to be necessary for making a decent hip scarf. I've been hunting for a tutorial without any luck. Does anyone know how to do this and can explain it to me? I'm pretty sure I can figure out the crochet part eventually, but I can't figure out how to get the coins and beads into it.
