My daughter just acquired a couple pet rats (kind of creepy, but I'm working through it). To make the best of the situation, and not invest a bunch of cash into something, I modified a bird cage and stand that I got for $2 at a garage sale many moons ago...

I wish I had taken pictures of the "before", the cage and stand were uber rusty and ugly before they were premiered and painted...but here is a close-up of the cage and its skirt (I made the skirt from some Shabby Chic fabric left over from another project)...

I made the rats a hammock out of a remnant of a vintage quilt, some elastic and some funky buttons...

Here is a picture of a smockron (name shamelessly stolen from The Simpson's) that I made for my daughter from two vintage tablecloths that were really stained and had holes...
