I found this wonderful site when I was looking for images of 1918 evening dresses (help anyone?), and thought it was such a wonderful and inspiring idea that I want to share it.

"The patchwork pattern was meant to symbolize how society, composed of many very different and loosely connected individuals, could and should become a concordant 'whole'. Just as the little pieces of cloth in the skirt, although completely different in colour, shape, size and structure, together formed a new whole in which the pieces blended together - so Dutch society, after the horrendous war, should become a whole that was more than its parts, to which all the components, new and old, bright and ugly, would contribute their share."

I'm very tempted to sew one of my own, using patches of fabric from old school dresses and sheets and such like. I know it's not anywhere near as symbolic as the original skirts, but I'll get use out of it and it's nifty way to acknowledge how strongly memories can be associated with a piece of fabric. I think we too often rely on photographs for such things.
