Question about dying gauze.

Has anyone ever dyed gauze? As in the kind that is used to dress wounds? I found a small roll of it in, of all places, an old pencil box. Utilizing it for medical purposes is pretty much out of the question now so I am thinking of using the gauze as ribbon for an empire waist on this dress which looks more like an apron, hence my attempt to decorate it. I wanted to ask the craftgrrls before investing in dye for such a tiny project.
