cutting stripey knit material

Ok, I have a very important question... I just bought some stretchy fabric which is going to be used as a bikini. It is a striped material, and I was wondering if I had to cut on the grain or if I can cut it diagonally so that it will be symmetrical and cool lookin. It is indeed a KNIT fabric not a woven one.

Does anyone have experience with doing this? It's a pretty expensive fabric.
