crochet virgin!

I've just started learning to crochet. At the moment I'm, erm, freestyle crocheting (!) due to lack of knowledge and/or pattern! So far I've made a three foot long black thing... ahem... & it looks pretty good! What I'd really like to make is a simple crochet hat! I think they're called beanies or something? Does anyone have a pattern or know where I could find one? All the books at the library only seemed to have really loose sunhat sort of things & that's not what I was looking for.
