Cowrie shells

I remember someone asking about cowrie shells because they wanted to make a cowrie shell necklace. The person was concerned about the animal having to die to leave the shell but it was a long time ago and I can't find the original post. This post came to mind when I visited a bead shop (the best one I've ever seen by the way) and found molded beads made to look like cowrie shells. I couldn't resist picking up a few of them and if I can track down the person who posted about this I'd love to send the beads.
