thread

So I bought a sewing machine, but they don't actually expect me to buy all of my thread one color at a time, right?
Is there something like the Crayola 8-pack, but for thread? The only thing I've found is a million colors and a million dollars (ok, $70some)
**edit** i think my real problem is that i live in a city and the micheals and joanns i used to frequent are in the suburbs. lately, i've done most of my craft shopping on their websites.
