more on dyeing

i've already checked the FAQ section for this but came up empty-handed:

i want to do tea-style dying; get the washed out, faded effect, but it in different colors than brown. i was wondering if anyone had tips on getting that look, but in reds/greens/grays...maybe just dilute existing dyes with water? use different tea? i'm planning to use this mostly on linen-type fabric, probably white or other light colors.
