painting on cheap leather

craftgrrl... or just leather in general.
i want to paint on my boots, but the last time i did it, it eventually rubbed off. i'm currently using acrylics and was wondering (specifically) if something like a fabric medium would work for leather. what would you suggest in general for painting on leathers? any specific paints? technique? a sealer or glaze? a medium or additive?
