Knitting question...

So I am starting on my first non-scarf knitting project. I chose something out of the Stitch n' Bitch Knitter's Handbook...the "Manly Sweater" on page 210 (in case any of you have it). I'll just type out the whole start of the pattern so...

With MC and larger needles, CO 97

Set up row: k3, p1*K5, p1, rep from* yo last 3 sts, K3. Work in K5, p1 rib as set for 16.5. At the same time, work 8.5 in MC, end with a WS row, then work color pattern (which they describe prior to this.)

Now, my question is, what is meant by "at the same time?" I don't understand at all. I talked to my grandmother about it--she has been knitting for like 60 years--but she had no idea what I was talking about.

And so I turn to you guys. Help please! I am all panicked...hehe...
