Chick with the painting bookshelf problem again.... and this one may be obvious to many of you, but since I'm a rookie, here goes:

Thanks to you guys, I've got a much better idea of what is going on the bookshelf in terms of painting and decoration... but now I have to actually buy a bookshelf to decorate (I would make one, but the projected costs are the same and I only have 9 days to complete the whole thing now)... at Michael's, a little wussy looking wooden shelf is 50 bucks and isn't even big enough to hold anything but a bunch of paperbacks. This is not conducive to a college student's textbook storing needs. Walmart has one for 30 bucks and it's big enough, but it's "engineered wood" (thus I'm guessing half plastic) with an "oak finish."

So my question is, is it at all plausible that I could use the cheaper, more appropriate one provided that I'm going to be using acrylics on it? Will it be ok to paint and then seal, or should I just splurge for the natural wood?

Thanks for any and all advice. Good thing I put this off until 9 days before D-Day, right?
