Pom Poms?

A group of my friends is putting together a kickball team and I'm going to be the cheerleader, so I need some pom poms. I googled but all that gives me is how to make the tiny yarn ones which I'm using the basic idea for anyway. But, I need to know what to use for a handle. I never was a cheerleader in school so I don't really know how they're constructed, I figure I'll use cut up garbage bags ( or plasic shopping bags) for the body but what should I use for a handle?
