Lampshade Tips

I was scanning the FAQs and I saw the light ideas, but I still have another question. I will have to buy some protective spray, but other than, does anyone have any do's/don'ts for making a lampshade?
I was thinking of just getting a plain little white one and decorating it somehow - paint, paper cutouts, ribbon/lace. Help?
