Knitting virgin

OK so I want to start knitting - I will be thrilled to bits when I can make as much as a scarf, giving that the last time I picked up a pair of kneedles I was in girl guides ahem...but anyway, can anyone give me any tips on what size needles I would need to use? This is probably a ridiculously simple question to mst of you, but when I was looking to buy a pair, I didn't even know they came in different sizes!! What would be best for starting off, just making simple things? Any help would be appreciated :)
