Bed Question

craftgrrlThis is off-topic, but I've seen many of you crafters make "duvets" a while ago so i'm guessing this community is knowledgable about beds.
So today I went shopping for my dorm and it's so confusing. I bought two packs and this is what they contain together: fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet, and 2 pillowcases. Can anyone tell me the use of the flat sheet and duvet? Can a duvet keep me warm at night? Do I need a comforter too? Am I missing anything?
