a simple hat is so hard to find!

I want to make a simple knitted hat for a guy. I have looked at countless patterns, and can't find anything simple enough. I only know how to knit an purl, I can do combinations, but I cant do cables. I just want an easy, knitted, probably chunky winter hat. Can someone write out some easy instructions? Or a link? I have checked all the links in the memories and can't find one simple enough. Do I need to use DPNs? I have never done anything round before, only flat scarves. Thanks.
