removing rivet buttons

I have a really cute blazer that could be dressed up if I changed the buttons, but unfortunately it has rivet buttons, like you usually find in jeans or denim jackets.
How do I get these things off? Preferably without tearing huge holes in the fabric?
I have tried prying them apart with a flathead screwdriver, to no avail. Any other ideas? Please?
