Covering Buttons in Fabric?

craftgrrlI'm making french memo boards for X-mas gifts this year and would like to sew on buttons where the ribbons intersect. I think it would be lovely to cover the buttons in some complimentary fabric. I've Googled how to do this, but can't find anything!
Does anyone have any tips on how I can do this? Thanks!
