a question for the pro knitters...

i'm a knitter newbie and i made my first attempt at a harry potter scarf. my problem is that even after ironing, it curls around the sides making it look a lot thinner than it is. i didn't use circular needles like i supposed to and i just did the basic knit/purl stitch (i don't know the proper name. like i said, me = newbie) so i was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this? is there some special ironing technique that should come in effect?
