Crocheting ripples

I've been trying a lot of news things lately, so I apologize for the lack of production of any final products.

I have a question, however, for the crocheting bunch out there. I can't seem to get the ripples down. Here's an example: Ripples. For now, I'd just like to make a scarf.

Can anyone provide simpler instructions, or a simpler variation of that one?
