scratchy wool

Alright. Today I bought a beautiful, 100% wool sweater to felt. Long story short (and three hot water washes with jeans later :P), it must have been superwash wool, and it didn't felt. That's no big deal, I'll just recycle the wool for a later project - it really is nice wool. But when I washed it, the yarn got kind of scratchy. Is there anyway to make it nice and soft again, or am I just screwed?
