Soo, I recently promoted myself to a job in a very nice restaurant, a little above the Olive Garden - very strict on uniform, creases, 100% cotton, etc. Neckties are required, and, being female and never wearing one before, have finally JUST mastered tying them and have a small, sad collection, as they are getting expensive.. but I'm really excited, mulling over ideas in my head.

I really want to hand-paint/craft on some plain-colored neckties! Though, I'm unsure of an okay type of paint to use. Fabric paint? Okay on silk? It's important that whatever I use, it doesn't flake off, as I am handling peoples' food. Also, how could I "seal" the outside of the tie so if and when a little water or wine gets on the tie, I don't have paint running down my long white apron?

Has anyone ever crafted their own neckties before? Painted on them? Sewn patches, anything? Any ideas?
I've scoured and searched over craftster as well as google. :\

I am very artsy/craftsy, art college student, etc, but I do not know how to sew... never learned...

thanks in advance, if anyone can help :)
