Applique?

Hi, Ladies.

sorry for a text only post. I have been in somewhat of a craft-rut lately. I know, it's terrible!

The memories section is not working right now, so I knew you gals would be able to help me. I have an old blue pull-over hoodie that I want to liven up a bit with some fabric patches, maybe some elbow patches, we'll see. But my question is, how do I applique?

I have a sewing machine and I feel like it would be easy with that, just sewing the edge to the sweatshirt? However, my problem is that I want to applique fabric onto the sleeves and front pouch, places that I can't maneuver a sewing machine in.

So...if I am to sew the fabric on by hand, what type of stich do I use? Should I hem the pieces before sewing them on so they they don't frey?
