Bags/Purses?

I really want to start making bags and purses. Does anyone know what a good fabric to use? I've used courdoroy (sp_) and I liked that, but it ended up being thick and has broken the sewing machines needle. I've seen that some are using fleece =) I was also thinking that just regular cotton fabric would be way too flimsy... If anyone could help it'd be GREATLY appreciated =)
