craftgrrl | Sewing stretchy slip material

I'm trying to sew fabric that is %86 nylon %14 spandex. It was orginally a slip/night gown but I'm trying to make it into a top.

The problem is when I try to sew it with my sewing machine it doesn't allow the bobbin thread to catch with the needle thread, so no stitches are created.

I know my sewing machine is fine because I can sew other fabrics with it, does anyone know what is going wrong with this particular fabric? Do I need to do something special to sew it?
