Knit Stitch Cap with Pom Poms

The right side of this cap resembles stockinette stitch in knitting; the other side looks like a fancy stitch in knitting.
Three ounces of light weight yarn are sufficient to make the cap, use one ounce for the pom poms. Use size D(3) or E(4) crochet hook. It stretches to fit from small to average head sizes, for larger sizes make a chain of 120 or 125 and make more rounds if desired.
Abbreviations: Ch (chain); st (stitch); sc (single crochet); sk (skip); sl st (slip stitch); rnd (round); lp (loop)

Gauge: 5 sts equal one inch.

Ch 115, sl st in first st of ch, sc in next st (always work in the lp on wrong side of ch), ch 1, sk next sc, continue around. Do not turn work, sc in the ch 1 between scs, * ch 1, sk sc, sc in ch 1, repeat from * for 90 rnds.

Fold the piece double, leaving it wrong side out. Use a yarn needle threaded with double yarn and gather both the inside and outside of top tight. Turn cap back about two inches or desired depth.

Cords-Ch 40, join with sl st and make 5 rnds the same as for cap, cut leaving a length to sew with, turn piece wrong side out, roll and sew the edges together. Make 2. Make a third cord in the same manner only ch 50 to begin.

Pom Poms-Cut a circle from cardboard (corrugated cardboard works well) 3 inches in diameter, cut hole 1 1/4 inches in diameter in the center of this circle. Cut a second circle two inches in diameter with a 1 inch hole in center.
Cut two pieces of yarn several yards long. Thread both ends of each piece through a large needle, thus making 4 strands. Cut another short length, double and hold this piece around circle, fill circle with yarn and tie with short piece, cut yarn around the edge and tie again tightly. Trim pom pom to shape.
Make 1 large and 3 small pom poms.
With crochet hook, pull the remaining ends of yarn through the center of the cords, sew cords to center of cap, sewing large pom poms on last. Sew the ends of cords securely to the small pom poms.
