Sep. 11th, 2006 10:34 pmOur pottery studio participated in the Tiles for America contest, in which studios across the country sent three 6"x6" tiles to the memorial; two being the names of 26 victims of 9/11 and the other being a painting that will represent the studio's city and state at the memorial. Tiles for America currently contains close to 5,000 tiles and is one of the "only surviving spontaneous memorials to 9/11 that remains in New York City". Recently, the memorial was vandalised when hundreds of tiles, some painted by relatives and friends of victims, were smashed with a hammer. That, and the fact that "the city requested and received a portion of the fence for the three year temporary memorial at Ground Zero, has lead to a renewed call to action for both old and new participants in this project. The goal is to represent all the victims of that tragic day, as was originally done."

Tiles for America can be found at the corner of 7th Avenue and 11th Street.
When I visited in December of 2001, I found it to be incredibly heartbreaking and moving. I feel honored to be able to be a part of it. I know its almost late, but I've been busy all day and I just wanted to share with anyone who might be interested.
