My stepmothers birthday was a couple of weeks ago and I finally got around to doing her present.

Everything I used, except the glue, I bought at a dollar store or three. I painted a wooden box with red, yellow, orange and used black to get other mixtures of those three colours. I glued on purty "gem" leaves on the top.

I glued coppery sparkles to the "viney" swirls I painted.

And I glued beautiful leaf confetti all over in a "blowing-in-the-wind" feel.

I love how it looks!

I painted the rim and top of the lid black, and glued brown cordouroy fabric as lining.

Which you can't see in this photo. But you can tell I "finished" the box.
Alison has a mess on her dresser which I hope this helps out. She is so hard to buy for cause she doesn't need anything, and doesn't really like getting knickknacks. So.....I think this fits the bill as useful, not cluttery (as it cleans clutter), and special.
