quick question

i was wondering anyone has ever done something like this, i have this idea.
i want to make a quilt but instead of doing the padding stuff inside and having a back of plain fabric or whatever (i totally dont know the actual terminology) i want to quilt patches together and then sew it on top of my comforter. is this a bad idea? i dont really see why it wouldn't work but i thought i'd ask you guys because well... you know everything!
