Cloth Pads

So, I've made up my mind. I want to use cloth pads, and I don't have any trouble finding/making them. My question is, seriously, how bad is the smell? How often do they need to be changed (obviously cleaning them after use)? How long are they good for? I suppose my main concern is smell. I freak out about the smell. But any other usage stories would be greatly appreciated :)
