Making christmas stocking

Im thinking of making a christmas stocking using felt. However I was also thinking of giving it a quilted look. Like sew patches of different coloured felt together into the stocking shape. Is that possible? Will my stocking go out of shape? I've never made anything using felt before in my entire life.
Oh what shapes do you suggest I should use for each piece? A mixture of shapes?
