Help with fabric paint

Hi there... I have never used fabric paint before, and would like to jazz up some of my plain t-shirts...  So what do I need?  Just fabric paint and a brush?  Are there any recommendations on fabric paint brands?  Any tips would be awesome!  Thanks!  I am looking to do statements mainly, but also some simple designs, like a kitty or a heart...
