My grandma gave me some instructions on how to do appliques. I decided to give it a try.
Step 1
Draw your shape on paper, and cut it out.

Make sure you draw it about 1/4 inch (about 1 cm) larger than you want the shape.

Step 2
Draw the shape on the fabric.

Step 3
Sew over the 1/4inch interior line.

Step 4
Cut flaps in to the stitched line from the outside (be careful not to cut your stitches of course)

Step 5
Fold in, and iron down the flaps to the wrong side of the fabric. For a nice clean look, fold the stitching under.

Step 6
Pin to the fabric, which you have to brush free of cat hair because you can't leave it sitting for a minute without someone calling it home.

Not even while you're pinning

Step 7
Sew to the fabric. Zizag stitch is preferable, but my machine doesn't do that.

Step 8
Finish the bag. Have it turn out not exactly as you wanted it because you made the design too big, and the fabric was so light it crumpled up a little, and man those circles are hard.

But learn something while you do it. Hope this helps and your (and my subsequent) projects turn out much better.
